Vahiguru ji ka Khalsa, Vahiguru ji ki Fatih!
What is love? It's a question that has perplexed philosophers, poets, and truth seekers throughout the ages. Today, we explore love deeply through Guru Nanak Sahib's composition in the Maru Kaphi rag (musical mode).
In the first composition, Guru Nanak Sahib adopts the persona of a human-bride, symbolizing the seeker in their quest for spiritual union. The words resound with profound intensity: My mind is dyed with my Divine-Husband. May I be a sacrifice, may I be cut into pieces, if it means the Divine-Spouse will grace me with a fleeting glance of divine favor.
We pause.
We reflect.
The seeker's mind is akin to a canvas saturated in the hues of love for the Divine-Spouse. But what is the essence of this love that compels one to surrender everything, even the prospect of being fragmented into pieces, for a moment of divine grace?
To fathom this love, envision a symphony where the seeker assumes the role of the conductor, and the Divine-Spouse embodies the music itself. Within this symphony, the seeker transcends the part of a mere listener; they wholly immerse themselves in the music. Every gesture, every note they conduct becomes an embodiment of their love for the Divine.
Picture it as an enchanting melody where the seeker's heart harmonizes perfectly with the Divine's tune. Like a conductor who merges with the music, the seeker becomes one with their love for the Divine. They encircle IkOankar, the One, the Divine-Spouse, with unwavering devotion.
The seeker's willingness to be figuratively "cut into pieces" for a fleeting glance of grace may initially seem extreme. Yet, it symbolizes the profound depth of their longing.
Imagine it as a journey through a dense forest, a quest for a concealed treasure. The seeker's desire to unearth this treasure, to establish a divine connection, is so ardent that they willingly traverse the most dangerous paths, even if it necessitates relinquishing their comfort and safety.
In pursuing this metaphorical treasure, the seeker is prepared to shed their attachments, ego, and pride – symbolized by the notion of being "cut into pieces." It signifies a symbolic shedding of all impediments obstructing their union with the Divine.
Love, often defying rationality, transcends the limitations of words and logic. It's akin to attempting to convey the flavor of the sweetest fruit to someone who has never tasted it. Words can only approximate the profoundness of this experience.
Love transcends mere emotion in its purest form; it becomes a transformative power. It guides us from separation to union, from agony to ecstasy. This journey defies explanation, yet it touches the innermost recesses of our being.
What are we willing to sacrifice on our spiritual journey? Are we ready to release our attachments, ego, and pride to achieve divine union, even if it means, metaphorically, being "cut into pieces"?
Ultimately, it's a journey of love, sacrifice, and unwavering devotion – a path that draws us closer to the Divine-Spouse, one step at a time.
Are we prepared to embrace the Divine with unwavering love?

Separation is perhaps the most difficult human emotion that one experiences. Does separation turn into a “longing?” Does “longing” guide us to an awareness? An awareness that love is eternal, so there can never be a separation in love.
