May We Yearn To Serve!

Vahiguru ji ka Khalsa, Vahiguru ji ki Fatih!

The Sikh Research Institute (SikhRI) team joins the global Sikh community in celebrating 16 September as the Gurgaddi Divas, Coronation Day, of Guru Ramdas Sahib and Guru Arjan Sahib.

Rai Balvand and Sata Dum, in the seventh stanza of Ramkali Ki Var, write, Blessed, blessed is Guru Ramdas; the One who has created; That One alone has adorned. A complete miracle has happened; by Own-Self, the Creator has established.

We bow.
We receive.

The Creator, who created Guru Ramdas Sahib, also mentored, adorned, refined, chiseled, and beautified the Guru. The greatness of the Guru comes from IkOankar, the Creator. A complete miracle has happened; an utterly magical thing with multiplicities has happened: The Creator by Own-Self has established and ensured this diversity of extraordinary things is also completed.

The passing of the Guruship to Guru Ramdas Sahib was monumental. It required overcoming many worldly barriers. The Guru was an orphan raised by his grandmother, selling boiled gram flour to survive. The Guru was poor and from a working-class, without family or privilege. It is by the Grace of the Creator that Bhai Jetha became Guru Ramdas Sahib. This is the miracle!

Rai Balvand and Sata Dum, in the eighth stanza of Ramkali Ki Var, write, Guru Arjan is sitting on the throne; the canopy of the true Guru is shining. From sunrise to sunset and from sunset to sunrise, he has spread light in all four directions.

We bow.
We receive.

Guru Arjan Sahib is next in the rule of Guru Nanak Sahib’s Raj. The Guru spread illumination far and wide. The Guru began the process of compiling the Guru Granth Sahib with the compilation of the Adi Granth. The Guru developed multiple sarovars (pools), baolis (wells with steps leading down to the surface of the water), and wells, along with the city of Amritsar and Tarn Taran. The miracle multiplied.

Do we feel that miracle?
Do we feel the illumination of the Guru spread far and wide?
Will we serve the Guru?

May we yearn to serve.
May the Wisdom-Guru guide us!
