Q1 Community Update - 22nd April 2019

April 22, 2019

Dear friends, Vahiguru ji ka Khalsa, Vahiguru ji ki Fatih!

As spring has finally set over the northern hemisphere, I witness the earth being embraced by the sun and can’t wait to behold the results of their love. Gratitude flows as I think of Guru Nanak Sahib, whose gift of Light and Love continues to transform the hearts and minds of seekers all around. That’s why, as you know, SikhRI is dedicating 2019 to celebrating Nanakshahi 550.

We continue to publish new online courses, all of which are available for free now. Our latest release covers Japu Sahib, the opening Bani (revelation) of the Guru Granth Sahib. The Bani is practically a firsthand account of Guru experiencing Truth and is considered a fundamental pathway into the Guru Granth Sahib and its worldview.

To help us reflect on our work and present you with a more personal understanding of Sabads, our researcher Jasleen Kaur has started a monthly series sharing her own perception of the Sabad of the Week offerings.

The Sabad of the Month series itself is going strong, with new transcreations being released regularly on our podcast The Sikh Cast. Besides, the podcast now offers children stories too. For example, this episode on Lessons in Equality. Have a listen and subscribe on iTunes, Spotify, or PodBean.

Our regular Thursday Thoughts series have recently been highlighting the inspirational beauty of Bhai Vir Singh’s book Guru Nanak Chamatkar: a dialog between Bhai Mardana and Guru Nanak Sahib. Follow us on Twitter and Facebook to never miss these updates.

We’ve also published the fourth installment of theState of the Panth series titled Akal Takht Sahib: Timeless Sovereign Throne. The series is our attempt to bridge the gap between the community and academia, and is available to everyone.

Just as Guru Hargobind Sahib’s two swords represented Miri-Piri sovereignty, so too do the physical structures of Sri Harimandar Sahib and Akal Takht Sahib. Sri Harimandar Sahib, embodying the Piri tradition, is situated directly across from Akal Takht Sahib, which embodies the Miri tradition.

Be sure to watch Harinder Singh’s webinar on the importance of Kartarpur Sahib for Sikhs and read Harpreet Kaur’s blog post about what transpires at Sidak. Our 17th annual Sidak Leadership Retreat this year will be held in beautiful British Columbia from July 21 to August 3.

Our speakers continue to be active in communities worldwide. In the first quarter of this year, Dr. Jaswant Singh, Harinder Singh, and I gave 8 presentations in India, Pakistan, UAE, USA, and Canada.

At the beginning of February, Professor Mohanbir Singh Sawhney hosted SikhRI’s inaugural Charter Member Summit at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. During an intense but uplifting 24 hours, the group from around North America gathered to explore the future of SikhRI.

On the weekend of March 23–24, SikhRI also had its annual Board meeting, an energizing gathering of truly committed individuals. Our Annual SikhRI Report for 2018 is available now.

Currently, the SikhRI Board is undergoing change as two members are retiring from their term: Baljinder Kaur who has been a Board member for more than 10 years and Jotinder Singh Mann whose term was six years. We are deeply grateful for their invaluable services to SikhRI.

Three Advisory Council members are also retiring: Jagdeep Singh from UK, and Chattar Raj Singh and Guntaas Kaur from Canada.

In turn, Ramandeep Kaur, who has been on the Advisory Council, is joining the Board.

SikhRI is growing, blossoming, and blooming — we have lots of available job opportunities. Please consider joining SikhRI and furthering our cause together.

As always, I welcome your comments or suggestions at inni.kaur@sikhri.org.

In gratitude for your love and trust,

Inni Kaur
