Happy Vaisakhi! On behalf of the extended Sikh Research Institute (SikhRI) family, we take this opportunity to greet the Sikh sangat, and Pañjābī world-wide.
Today we remember and commemorate the momentous inauguration of the Khalsa Panth, by Guru Gobind Singh Sahib in 1699.
This Vaisakhi we have one more reason to celebrate. The SikhRI team announces the launch of its Gurbani language book, “Guru Granth Sahib: Its Language &Grammar.”
SikhRI stays committed to continuously produce and deliver Sikh education resources and tools to the worldwide Sikh sangat. Inderpreet Singh, our Chair person released the book and said, “It is indeed heartwarming to share yet another major accomplishment with the sangat. We are proud to announce the release of another resource to enable Guru inspired living, which will encourage learners of the language of Gurbani to develop a closer, personal and more meaningful relationship with the Guru. No matter what your level of current engagement with Gurbani, this book will be a great resource to further the development of that relationship.”
This book provides us with an opportunity to experience the Guru’s message firsthand. The textbook is set up in a language course format. It can be used to take lessons both in a classroom environment as well as through self-study
While there are many works available to engage the Pañjābī-speaking audience, there is a void in the English language for such are source. This textbook is intended for use by an English-speaking audience, especially those in the diaspora. Readers will have the tools needed to independently interpret and enhance their understanding of Gurmat (Gurū’s Wisdom).
This textbook gives an overview of the languages of the Guru Granth Sahib, the Gurmukhi script, its pronunciation and grammar. Since, grammar serves as an important tool for the production of meaningful interpretations of Gurbani, this textbook, along with the Gurbani language course offered by the Sikh Research Institute, seeks to introduce a basic approach for accessing the linguistics of the Guru Granth Sahib.
The book is co-authored by Harinder Singh (CEO, SikhRI), Jaswant Singh(Scholar at the Sikh Centre, Singapore), and Surender Pal Singh (Research Associate, SikhRI). The book has been graciously reviewed by Harpreet Singh(Fellow and a member of the faculty, Department of South Asian Studies,Harvard University), Surinder Singh (Sikh School of Los Angeles), and Gurdit Singh.
Harpreet Singh, summarizes his thoughts about the book: “Since its establishment as the centerpiece of Sikh life in 1604, the Guru Granth Sahib has contributed immensely to the self-definition of the Sikhs as a community. Even though the message enshrined in the scripture enjoys an unimpeachable authority over now a global community of practitioners, a serious textual study of its contents remains in a terrible state of neglect. A handful of scholars in the modern period began the work of illuminating the existence of a fascinating grammar, which can be helpful in taking the primary step toward understanding the Sikh discursive tradition. The present work is a much-needed attempt to articulate this grammar in English. It deserves to be on the bookshelf of every individual interested in the study of the Sikh scripture.”
