Barah Maha is Sikh Research Institute’s (SikhRI) first children’s online course.
Barah Maha is a folk poetry style that expresses the emotions and yearnings of the human heart in terms of the changing seasons of Nature with each particular month over the twelve months of the year. The course is based on the Bani of Barah Maha revealed each by Guru Nanak Sahib and Guru Arjan Sahib. The Gurus have transformed this folk poetry into a spiritual journey of love. Through it, they have explained the connection between a human being and Vahiguru that can be easily understood by a common person.
As Sikh parents, we are constantly concerned about our children’s lack of engagement with Sikhi, and we look for opportunities to connect them with our heritage.
The course provides an opportunity for children to connect with Gurbani through Barah Maha. Amongst other things, it exposes children to numerous Gurbani themes, new vocabulary and Sikh attitude towards nature, life, and its real goals. In the process the course also brings children closer to Nature. It also encourages children to reflect and think about their own life and priorities.
Each lesson in the course is designed with a set of easy objectives followed by an activity to help trigger a thought, feeling and reflection. It encourages individual learning at home and compliments the classroom school education. It may well turn out to be a crucial step in your children’s Sikhi education that may have a lasting impact on their psyche; something that we also intend to achieve by sending them to numerous kids’ camps.
The course is meant for children aged 11 and above; though adults can equally benefit from it like any other Gurbani course. Since Gurbani can be considered a little heavy for children, it is highly recommended that parents join them while they go through the course. It will serve to not only help children better understand the content, but will also benefit the adults, since they get to learn from it too, while creating deeper family bonds with everyone’s involvement.
We hope that you and your child benefit from this course and most importantly just develop a want to learn more about Gurbani.
The course has been graciously sponsored by Jaskiran Kaur & Harpal Singh, Dallas, TX, USA.
