Sohila: The Song of Union

Discover Sohila, the Sikh night prayer that reflects life’s purpose, cosmic worship (Arti), and the spirit’s union with the IkOankar (the One).

Literally meaning a song of joy, Sohila is a Bani that embodies celebration and reverence. Traditionally recited before sleep, during the Sukhasan ceremony of the Guru Granth Sahib, and after cremation, Sohila marks moments of transition—between day and night, between physical presence and transcendence.

The Guru uses this Bani to emphasize the fleeting nature of life and the spirit's ultimate union with IkOankar (the One). It draws a parallel between worldly rest and eternal peace, urging seekers to reflect on the purpose of existence, the impermanence of the physical body, and the importance of remembering IkOankar. Through cosmic metaphors and poetic imagery, Sohila redefines Arti (ritual worship) as the continuous symphony of creation itself, where the elements of nature—sun, moon, stars, air, and water—perpetually sing praises of the One.

Sohila answers such questions as:

  • What is the purpose of this life?
  • How does one establish a true relationship with the One?
  • What is the nature of cosmic worship (Arti)?
  • How can one free themselves from the cycle of birth and death?

This course invites participants to explore Sohila not just as a prayer but as a profound reflection on life’s journey, realigning perspectives on existence and devotion. As with all SikhRI online courses, participants will also learn new vocabulary and concepts related to its themes besides engaging with the Bani.

Registration for Sohila is open for all on the SikhRI website.
