In our first session, we will look in detail at what occurred in Amritsar in June of 1984. First, we will look at the direct lead-up to the attack and the political background of what occurred. We will then go day by day through what happened during the first week of June 1984. We will critique official narratives and provide evidence for what actually happened.
In the second week, we will keep looking at June 1984, but change our focus from Amritsar to the entire state of Panjab. We will look at the shutdown and closing of Panjab to the outside world. We will examine the attack on dozens of other Gurduaras around the state, as well as the issue of Sikh army personnel who mutinied. We will also look at what Sant Jarnail Singh Khalsa Bhindranwale’s plan was in case of an attack.
This session will look at the events of the first week of November 1984, in which genocidal attacks against Sikhs occurred across India, especially in the capital city of Delhi. We will discuss why the language surrounding the events of November has changed from riots to pogroms to genocide and what that means. We will look at why these events should not be considered spontaneous riots by examining the planning that went into these horrific massacres. We will look at other cities that experienced violence.
In our final session, we will look at the immediate aftermath of June and November 1984. We will discuss the rebuilding of the Akal Takht Sahib. We will look at what life was like for Sikhs after November 1984 in the rest of India. Operation Woodrose and the militarization of Panjab will be discussed. Finally, we will briefly look at the start of the Khalistan movement.
