First, we will look at the direct lead-up to the attack and the political background of what occurred. We will then go day by day through what happened during the first week of June 1984. We will critique official narratives and provide evidence for what actually happened.

About the Series

In this course, we will provide a detailed account of what occurred in June and November 1984, looking at the events from a Sikh perspective. We will explore not only what happened day by day but also the larger significance of the events. After detailing what occurred in June and November 1984, we will turn to the immediate aftermath of 1984 and try to put into context events like Operation Woodrose and the rise of the Khalistan movement.

Santbir Singh is a Research Associate with SikhRI. He is currently doing his Ph.D. in Sociology at York University. His graduate research focuses on Sikh activism and the inherent relationship between Sikhi and anarchism explored through historical and contemporary Sikh movements, such as the Kisān Morcha (Farmer’s Protests) of 2020-2021.
