Harinder Singh explains why Guru Arjan Sahib was tortured and martyred. The martyrdom took place under the orders of Emperor Jahangir during the second year of his reign. Nothing exists in the vacuum, most likely it was the combination of familial animosity, Sikhi growth, and political challenge. We look at some contemporary historical evidence and Sikh memory tradition for possible reasons for the Guru’s arrest and martyrdom.
