Salok Mardana 1

Ignorance-era is the carafe,
In it is liquor of lust,
Mind drinks.

Anger is the cup,
Brims with attachment,
Pride serves.

Trash-lie’s greed is the party,
Drinks and drinks,
Winds up frustrating.

Make great-deeds the carafe,
Put in molasses of the Eternal,
Brew real liquor.

Make virtues the bread,
Honesty the clarified butter,
Humility the meat diet.

O’ Nanak!
Realize this by becoming Guru-oriented,
Vices depart by consuming this. 1.

Mardana 1

Body, the carafe,
Pride, the liquor,
Desires’ drive the party.

Intention, the cup,
filled with trash-lies,
Death-Messenger serves.

O’ Nanak!
By drinking this liquor,
many vices are earned.

Make wisdom the molasses,
Glory the bread,
Reverence the meat diet.

O’ Nanak!
This food is eternal,
Its support is eternal Nam. 2.

Make the body the carafe,
Self-realization, the liquor,
Its stream is Immortal.

Eternal-congregation, the meeting,
Connection, the cup brimmed with Immortality,
Drink and drink…discard vices. 3.

Sabad is Infinite; we are very finite. This is our understanding at the moment, which was different yesterday and may evolve tomorrow, as we deepen our relationship with the Sabad. In this trans-creation, we have chosen to keep the repeating words in the Sabad same. We aspire to learn and retain the Divine attribute as used in the original Sabad and avoid terms like God or Lord.
