In the serene and contemplative ambiance of the Kedara rag, Guru Arjan Sahib's Sabad resonates with profound devotion and spirituality. Typically performed during the tranquil hours from 9 p.m. to midnight, the Kedara rag evokes deep emotions, creating a space for introspection and connection with the One.

The Sabad begins by expressing the sheer beauty and allure of the Beloved's love. The seeker, filled with excitement and conscious longing, focuses intently on the Beloved, highlighting a deep, unwavering devotion.

Guru Arjan Sahib further amplifies the spiritual ecstasy by cherishing the moments spent in divine contemplation. Every day, hour, minute, and instant becomes a blessing, a precious interval in the seeker's life. The imagery of suddenly opened shutters signifies an awakening, a moment when divine realization quenches the being's thirst, bringing the seeker to life through the vision of the Beloved.

The Sabad then transitions to a contemplation on the means of attaining this divine union. It questions the need for efforts, remedies, or specific services, pointing instead to the core spiritual virtues essential for liberation. Guru Arjan Sahib emphasizes abandoning pride, ego, and attachment as the path to true spiritual freedom. The guidance of the Truth-Exemplars (the Guru or the enlightened ones) is portrayed as crucial for attaining liberation.

Love of the Beloved is lovely.
Excited mind consciously longs, eyes are fixed on You.  Reflect.

How blessed are those days, hours, minutes, auspicious moments and instants?
Suddenly shutters open, thirst quenches, I live seeing You.  1.

Which effort, which remedy, which service to think of?
Nanak: Abandon pride, ego and attachment, Truth-Exemplars’ company liberates. 2.

About Sabad of the Week

We are finite; our understanding is finite. Our understanding was different yesterday and may evolve tomorrow as we deepen our relationship with the Sabad. In this trans-creation, we have chosen to keep the repeating words in the Sabad same. We aspire to learn and retain the Divine attribute used in the original Sabad and avoid terms like God or Lord.
