Living in Divine Awareness

Guru Arjan Sahib’s sabad teaches that true fulfillment comes from meditating on Nam, living in divine awareness, and singing praises, leading to eternal peace.

Guru Arjan Sahib’s sabad reveals the essence of true living. The seeker’s desires are fulfilled by partaking in the food of Truth—meditating on Nam with mind, body, and tongue. True wealth is not material but lies in divine consciousness and the company of the Guru-oriented. Those who sing Divine praises wear robes of Grace and walk the sacred path. Through deep meditation on Sabad, one attains lasting comfort and liberation.

I am satisfied and satiated, eating the food of Truth.
With my mind, body, and tongue, I meditate on Nam. || 1 ||
True living is living in divine consciousness.
Live in the congregation of true companions. || 1 ||Reflect ||
One is dressed in robes of all sorts
if one sings the Divine’s Glorious Praises, day and night. || 2 ||
One rides upon elephants, chariots, and horses
if one sees the Divine’s Path within one’s own heart. ||3 ||
Submitting to the Divine, deep within one’s mind and body,
votary Nanak has realized the Divine, the treasure of peace. || 4 || 2 || 56 ||

Reflection

Breath tightens as I listen to today’s Hukam.
Guru is beyond kind. Guru reveals the true essence of life.

Is it possible for love to amplify with every breath?
For that is what I feel.

As far back as I can remember, an unrelenting thirst has lived within me—a need to understand the purpose of life. Was existence truly confined to eating, sleeping, working, and procreating? No. There had to be more.

Then, Guru’s voice resounds:
"My hungers and desires were satiated when I ate the food of Truth."
Mind immersed in the One.
Body surrendered in service.
Tongue in ceaseless praise of the Creator, Nurturer, and Sustainer.

This is the food of Truth.
The words of Anand Sahib echo within:
"O my tongue, eyes, ears, and hands—what were you created for? What are you doing?"

What is life?
"True living is to live in the consciousness of the Eternal One, to meditate in the congregation of Guru-oriented beings." (Reflect.)
Sing the praises of the Eternal One—day and night, breath by breath.

Each breath—a conscious breath.
Each action—a conscious act.
Each word—a mindful word.
Guru’s voice strikes deep, altering my very being.

"Those who sing the praises of the Divine wear the true robes of Grace."
Their hearts recognize the Path.
Their minds ride on the chariots of wisdom, the elephants of realization, the horses of divine love.

True wealth is this awareness.
To listen to the Guru’s Word is to ride the horse.
To accept the Guru’s Way is to ride the chariot.
To internalize the Guru’s Wisdom is to ride the elephant.

These are the riches, the grandeur, the adornments.
The Guru-oriented care neither for praise nor slander—
Their very breath is adorned in Grace.

"By meditating on Sabad deep within one’s consciousness, one finds endless Eternal Peace."

Head bows.Heart quiets.Mind dissolves.Only the Eternal remains.

About the Series

Sabad is Infinite; we are very finite. This is our understanding at the moment, which was different yesterday and may evolve tomorrow, as we deepen our relationship with the Sabad. In this trans-creation, we have chosen to keep the repeating words in the Sabad same. We aspire to learn and retain the Divine attribute as used in the original Sabad and avoid terms like God or Lord.
