Guru Arjan Sahib’s sabad reveals the grip of pride and Maya’s illusion. Liberation comes by heeding the wise, shedding desires, and surrendering to the Guru’s Grace

Guru Arjan Sahib’s sabad urges us to recognize the grip of pride and illusion. Maya entangles us, making us forget the Giver while clinging to gifts. Desires consume like fire, yet escape lies in listening to the awakened ones. Their wisdom cleanses transgressions, guiding us from darkness to light. True liberation comes through surrender, dissolving the cycle of birth and death. The path is challenging, but with Guru’s Grace, transformation unfolds.

My foolish heart is in the grip of pride.
By the Will of my Creator, Maya, like a witch, has swallowed my spirit. || Reflect ||
More and more, one continually yearns for more;
but unless one is destined to receive, how can one obtain it?
One is entangled in wealth, bestowed by the Creator;
the unfortunate one attaches oneself to the fire of desires. || 1 ||
Listen, O mind, to the Teachings of the holy Saints,
and all your transgressions shall be totally washed away.
One who is destined to receive from the Creator,
being Nanak, shall not be cast into the womb of reincarnation again. || 2 || 2 || 19 ||

Reflections

In today’s Hukam, the Guru calls me to awaken—to lift the veil of illusion and face the Truth. My foolish mind, intoxicated by its own pride, has wrapped itself in desires, mistaking the transient for the eternal. The gifts have eclipsed the Giver. The mirage of Maya - the attachment to the temporary, which the Creator’s own Will also fashions—has swallowed my spirit whole, yet I remain enamored and oblivious to the consuming fire.

Pause. Reflect.
What is it that I chase?
What is it that I truly seek?

The insatiable thirst for more leads only to entanglement—more wanting, more grasping, more burning. The wealth that I clutch, the desires that I nurture, are but fleeting embers destined to fade. The unfortunate attach themselves to this fire, mistaking warmth for sustenance, yet it only devours.

But there is a way—a path illumined by Grace.
A voice calls: Listen. Listen to the wisdom of the awakened. Let their words cleanse the stains of transgression. Let their guidance loosen the shackles of illusion. Let the mind surrender to the One, where no fire burns and no shadow lingers.

To listen is to begin.
To follow is to transform.
To surrender is to be liberated.

The path is arduous.
The chiseling cuts deep.
Yet—I continue…

Guru Graces.
Head bows.

About the Series

Sabad is Infinite; we are very finite. This is our understanding at the moment, which was different yesterday and may evolve tomorrow, as we deepen our relationship with the Sabad. In this trans-creation, we have chosen to keep the repeating words in the Sabad same. We aspire to learn and retain the Divine attribute as used in the original Sabad and avoid terms like God or Lord.
