This Sabad composed by Guru Arjan Sahib in the Bilaval rag reflects the deep, unbreakable bond of love between the individual and the Divine. Bilaval evokes a sense of happiness, accomplishment, and the resolve to continue walking the spiritual path. In this Sabad, the overwhelming theme is the unshakable connection with the Divine, a bond so tightly secured by the "Master-Illusionist" that it cannot be broken or severed by any worldly force.

The imagery of this unbreakable love conveys the Divine’s omnipresence in the devotee’s life. The Sabad points out that, even amidst the chaos of life, the Divine resides within the mind, day and night, offering constant comfort and guidance. This internal presence reflects a state of surrender, in which the devotee acknowledges their dependence on the Divine’s grace for all actions and outcomes.

The "Dark-complexed Beautiful" metaphor evokes a rich sense of devotion and reverence. The reference to hearing an "indescribable narrative" suggests that the experience of Divine love and grace transcends human language—it can only be felt deeply within the heart. This reflects the profound mystery and beauty of the Divine, whose presence is both alluring and beyond comprehension.

In the concluding lines, Guru Arjan Sahib humbly positions himself as a "votary of Your votaries," underscoring his humility and the grace-filled nature of this relationship with the Divine. It is not merely through personal effort that one experiences this bond but through the grace of the Divine itself. The final appeal for grace reflects a deep dependence and a profound trust in the Divine’s generosity.

Love with my Beloved developed.  Reflect.

Master-Illusionist tightly secured it such:
Breaking it, cannot be broken,
Releasing it, cannot be released.  1.

Day and night,
You abide within mind,
O! Divine, bestow Your Grace.  2.

I surrender and surrender
To the Dark-complexed Beautiful
Whose story I heard is an indescribable narrative.  3.

Says servant Nanak,
Votary of Your votaries,
O! Ruler, bestow Your Grace. 4

About Sabad of the Week

We are finite; our understanding is finite. Our understanding was different yesterday and may evolve tomorrow as we deepen our relationship with the Sabad. In this trans-creation, we have chosen to keep the repeating words in the Sabad same. We aspire to learn and retain the Divine attribute used in the original Sabad and avoid terms like God or Lord.
