Students remember Sikh temple shooting victims - 20th September 2012 | SikhRI News

More than 60 people huddled together with candles in hand on the steps of Brower Commons for an interfaith vigil in memory of the seven Sikhs who died Aug. 5 after a shooting at a Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wis.

Sran said they took a detour to visit Oak Creek the next day and attended a vigil at a sister temple. The people at the vigil were not just sad and angry, but proud their community could come together after an event like this and hope for better things ahead, he said.

The Idea, Context, Framing and Realities of ‘sikh Radicalisation’ in Britain

About the Presentation: “Dr. Jasjit Singh will talk about his recent research project which examined the idea, context, framing and realities of ‘Sikh radicalisation in Britain’ following media reports about this issue in 2015. Dr Singh gathered evidence by interviewing self-identifying Sikh activists and by analysing historic and contemporary media sources, academic literature, social media and online discussion forums. He also conducted a series of community consultations on the emerging findings which fed in to the final report. Dr Singh requests that those signing up for the webinar familiarise themselves with the Executive Summary and Full report before the webinar. The links to these are in the following Press Release and are free to download: https://www.leeds.ac.uk/news/article/4136/understanding_sikh_activism_in_britain” About the Presenter: “Dr Jasjit Singh is a Research Fellow in Religious and Cultural Transmission based at the University of Leeds. His research examines religious identity and processes of religious and cultural transmission among British South Asians with a focus on British Sikhs. Having completed his PhD which examined processes of religious transmission among 18-30 year old British Sikhs, Dr Singh has successfully undertaken a number of research projects. He has an emerging track record in publications including peer-reviewed journals and edited collections and is regularly invited to appear on media including mainstream British media (BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio 4, BBC Asian Network) and Sikh media (Sikh Channel, Akaal Channel). He is a visiting fellow at the Faiths & Civil Society Unit at Goldsmiths University of London and is a member of a number of academic networks. Subversion of Justice | Surender Pal Singh
Subversion of Justice | Surender Pal Singh

Over the past forty years, more than ten commissions and inquiry committees have been set up to find the truth behind the November 1984 Sikh genocide, probing the role of police and politicians and seeking to identify the culprits. However, justice continues to elude the victims even after four decades in what is purportedly the largest democracy in the world. This raises several questions: Was the pursuit of justice the actual objective behind the creation of these commissions and inquiry committees? Did these commissions and committees help the victims get justice? What role did these individual commissions and committees play in the judicial and executive process?Did political considerations impact the findings and effectiveness of these commissions and committees in holding the culprits accountable? This article tries to answer some of these questions.

S. Gurbir Singh | Manjit Singh

Very few individuals in this world can change lives of people they encounter. Like a sandalwood tree they transmit the fragrance of life to whoever meets them. Sardar Gurbir Singh was one of those rare Guru inspired GurSikhs. And I was one of the fortunate ones to be blessed with his sangat.

Every day after working at the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), he used to go to the Sector-34 Gurdwara, Chandigarh. Although he was the head of the Chandigarh circle Sikh Missionary College, I witnessed him cleaning the office and doing all kinds of menial chores that men in India still avoid.
